sketch

have been busy for the visa thing recently.
too frustrated to produce anything, thats really bad.

things finally made a little bit progress so at least I know what to do now.

this one is just a doodle of playing around with some new brushes from my friend.

snow again

similar to the previous one but also different.
spent a bit more time on exploring more brushes and some good technics to make the painting more finished.
also starting to figure out how to do buildings now. next one need to do some city scales or maybe forest.

the problem for this one is layer management, which brought me much headache. this directly caused the problem which the sky or probably the whole picture looks quite dull. this is something else I need to put more effort.

PS: went to new forest with my 'life tutors', and spent 2 days with them. I think that was fun and very inspiring in artistic aspects.

snow

using brushes were fun, will definitely do more of these sort of practice.
there is one finished version, with some extra render.

brush study

started to experiment with different brushes based on brachna's tutorials.
hopefully after several pieces I can really know how to use it. it's gonna really take times to master
the using of brushes. good way to widen the mind and to be creative with different brush marks.

this is a half way done study piece.

nearly 3 hours

X

update.

for now it really is the time to push myself to next stage i think.
using texture brushes, details and make a good using of different tools, applying dynamic perspectives in to the image and etc. otherwise i cant see myself making any progress.

tonal concept

havent been doing any characters for a while
so I came up with this one.
this one took more than 2 hours, need to speed up.

cloud study

just figured out that using hard edge brush for cloud is actually pretty good. also keep the opacity 100%, so the contrast will be stronger which will in a way give bit more impact.(probably)
anyway, cant remember how long this one took.
it's just a study.

tonal

everything in one layer is not a very good idea for putting details. need to work on that.

Friday, 8 October 2010

update

need to work on the layer now, even as a speed painting
it's always better to get things organised.
roughly 20 minutes.

green

this one I tried to spend a little bit more time, around 2 hours

really need to work on the trees, that look actually really bad.

quick doodle before sleep

even this one got same problem as the previous one, but i did figure out where is the problem.

guess if I scale the central object down would be better. well

done in 20minutes

Saturday, 25 September 2010

update

try to do a scene of city scale, only problem I find is the composition is not wide enough which make the city scale looks not big enough. need to work on that.

update

a bit busy recently, and i dont even know what i am doing.
anyway, need to keep this thing going and not leave it for too long.

drawing process

Ok so here is a video I recorded quite a while ago. this character is in the picture I posted earlier.
since I havent been doing anything worth posting after the last one, better keep the thing going anyway.
So this is a character design for my friend's fiction. well, I got the 'rough' idea from her before i did this.
as you can see while i was drawing or painting probably, I was also checking how does the character
look like based on the original design. and looking at other random stuff which do not related to the
picture.

anyway, just want to say to work on top of a sketch is a good practice for droping quick ideas and this
tonal drawing or painting could always be turned into a single illustration which is good.
the total working time was 45minutes, and i squeezed the video timeline make it play 4times faster
so this video is around 11and half minutes. hope anyone who accidentally visiting or will be visiting my blog will enjoy it. Thank you very much.

touch up

just did some variations of the same picture.
it was fun.

finished background

Here you go, it's done.

have to say it's much simpler than I expected.
this one takes around 10-12 hours, including the times when I checking with the tutorials and refrences.
If I can master this way of doing background paintings.a picture like this one would only take 6-8 hours.

anyway, I will play around with some of the rendering things now.
whereas this one, set in day time probably afternoon, simple lighting and perspective.
it's done.

PS: there is also another one which shows how it looks like before I adjust the tone and hue.

be economical for colouring

just relised several things while I am doing the background painting. since it's all done digitally, and the main tool for creating shading is the paint bucket. in a way, it gives a really nice and smooth gradiention but also has a nice control to the colours which doesnt let the hue go too crazy.

Someone probably wondering that if the full digital produced image would make the image looks artifical. I suppose this is all depending on how the final rendering works with the picture. since the one I am working on right now is a interior scene which all the elements are defined as man made object. So it will works.

And for colouring, I was saying that the gradient tool has a nice control of colours. the same principle would also works on free hand paintings( i mean digital painting without using stright line or path tools). If 2 colours could explain one thing there is no point for using 4 instead, unless it's done for a reason. such as secondry, tertiary or even quaternary lighting and etc. after all there is a reason that people says keep it simple. however why not being ambitious then?

anyway, we will see how does this goes.

background

right, now I am going to make a background painting. I have to say what I have done at the uni werent really help me much. so I deicide to start from beginning.

I visited a Japanese artist's website and found some really good stuff, and I think I will be spending several weeks try to catch up my background skill.
since someone was laughing at my background skill, and it's fired me up a bit. that why I feel like do this now
===============================================
anyway, I have started now, here is the cleaned up and the same one with colours.
I know the colours are awful but this is only for dividing each sections and making life
easier for later on.
and after two or three days? maybe tomorrow.
lets see whats going to happen.

character concept

took some drawings from the previous post and play around for a while.

the new brush in PSCS5 was good to use, still I would prefer the square brush in SAI.

figure drawings

those figure drawings are always good for generating ideas and experiment different poses.

and each of them only takes 2 to 3 minutes. good fun.
I think I start to love drawing the big bellies now.
different body types and poses could actually give some background stories already.

some more works

those tonal sketches are always fun to do.
well, still anime and manga stuff.

start to post some works

I really need to get some works in the blog now

so much time wasted before.
anyway, just put some of my old and recent stuff as a beginning.
you can see I spent quite a bit just to have fun with anime and manga style.
have to say even I get a job some where in the UK for doing concept design or whatever,
I would still draw these stuff in my own time because I just like it.

First Test

this is a test.
